My name is Frank Rupe. I teach 3rd grade at Guin Creek Elementary School and also have an after school guitar club. My club was in need of acoustic guitars, Lawrence pick-ups, and amps. Others may have thought, what did this have to do with academics and helping students in school, but not Robert and Susan. During the 2008-2009 school year, I received a L.I.F.T. Teacher Grant, “Guion Guitar Club” to purchase these musical items. I teach fractions through strum patterns and whole number patterns through scales to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.
Students learn how to play the guitar, play as an ensemble, and also study Blues history. Since receiving the grant each year we have written and recorded songs, performed our own music. We have made tapes to teach bother grades math facts and enjoy performing at Multi-cultural Nights, Black History Nights, and at the end of the year ceremonies. With the generous support of The L.I.F.T. Foundation I am able to include many more students who then reach out to their peers.
